ABOUT PHYSIOTHERAPY
Physiotherapy is an integral part of Modern Scientific Medicine. It is a drugless therapy. It is dynamic Science. During course of time many more modalities are adding to this medical science. It has major role in prevention and medical rehabilitation of physically handicapped.
SCOPE
Scope in this field of physiotherapy is very large. It is estimated that about 10% of the population is suffering from physical disability in one way or the other. In India, many people are becoming physically disabled because of ignorance of preventive therapy and lack of professionals like physiotherapists.
Physiotherapy has major role in diagnosis, preventive and prognosis of many disor
ders like PARALYSIS, ORTHOPEDIC CONDITIONS, ARTHRITIS and JOINT DISEASES, CARDIO/RESPIRATORY disorders, electron physiological analysis from child hood to oldage diseases. According to WHOs norm, every ten thousand population may need atleast one but according to one report, there are only about four thousand physiotherapists in India. As there is a lot of brain drain from India in many popular sciences, physiotherapists is also have no exception. Most of the people qualified in India are leaving to foreign countries as there is very great demand in eastern and western countries.
VACANCIES ABROD
A recent survey published in one of the American magazines shows that united states of America alone needs more then forty four thousand physiotherapists. The same survey also recalls that amongst the most sought after professionals physiotherapist stands third. In Europe and gulf countries also there are thousands of vacancies in the field of physiotherapy.
To sum up, physiotherapy is one of the allied medical field which is developing very fast.
1. BACHELOR DEGREE IN PHYSIOTHERAPY
The collage is sanctioned by the Govt. of Karnataka, Department of Medical Health. The collage is affiliated to Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Science in Karnataka, Bangalore. The duration of this course is four years including six month internship in hospitals.
ELIGIBILITY
A pass in 10 + 2 or its equivalent with 50% marks in science with Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English as one of the subjects.
Apart from above qualification for eligibility, the candidates who have passed diploma course in physiotherapy are also eligible to join degree course in physiotherapy which is bridge course of one year duration. The bridge course is being approved by the rajiv gandhi university of health sciences.
DIPLOMA IN PHYSIOTHERAPY (DPT)
The Diploma course is recognized by board of examinations in physiotherapy and development of medical education, govt. of Karnataka. The duration of this diploma course in physiotherapy is three and half years including six months internship in hospitals. After the completion of this diploma course of one year duration. These bridge course is being approved by the rajiv Gandhi university of health science, Bangalore.
ELIGIBILITY
A pass in 10 + 2 or its equivalent with 40% marks in science group with physics, chemistry and biology with english as one of the subjects.
SUBJECTS TO BE STUDIED
The above one and two courses are structured around the following subjects.
These include Human Anatomy, Physiology, Pathology, Microbiology, Neurology, Massage Therapy, Sports Medicine, Electrotherapy, Clinical Orthopedics and Knowledge of Cardio Thoracic diseases.
SPECIAL SUBJECT TO BE STUDIED IN B.Sc. PHYSIOTHERAPY
Apart from the above Medical subjects included in the syllabus of both the diploma and degree courses of physiotherapy, students of B.Sc.(Physiotherapy) have other subjects to be studied by them. For E.g.. Medical Electronics, Computer knowledge in medical science etc.,
DIPLOMA IN PHYSIOTHERAPY (D.P.T)

LABORATORIES
To give complete subject exposure under the guidance of well experienced professionals, H.M.S Institute of Physiotherapy has established separate well equipped laboratories like Anatomy, Physiology, biochemistry, Microbiology, Pharmacology, Sports and fitness Laboratory, Orthotic and Prosthetics, Electrotherapy.
CLINICAL AND HOSPITAL FACILITIES
This institute has a separate Physiotherapy Clinic with sophisticated and modern physiotherapy equipments to provide a good service to public as well as to train the students during their course of study. A special physiotherapy hospital is proposed to be constructed during the current academic year.
ATTACHMENT TO DISTRICT GENERAL HOSPITAL TUMKUR
H.M.S Institute of Physiotherapy is attached to district general Hospital, Tumkur by an order of Govt. Of Karnataka Department of Medical Health for training. It is the biggest Hospital in Tumkur District with three hundred bed capacity. It is a well equipped hospital. It has a separate Physiotherapy Department. The student of H.M.S Institute of Physiotherapy ae regularly posted to this Hospital for both Teaching and special training for the purpose of chemical lab facilities in Medical, Surgical and Physiotherapy. The student of both B.P.T and D.P.T are compulsorily sent to SPORTS AUTHORITY OF INDIA, Kengeri, Bangalore to get knowledge in sports medicine and allied fields every year.
Educational tours and training are arranged in other parts of the country to facilitate good exposure to the student of institute Arrangements are also made to conduct seminars on physiotherapy and allied subject with the other collage which are conducting the same program.
ACADEMIC INTEREST
Since Physiotherapy is an upcoming profession both in services as well as academically it has a large opportunity for higher studies like Graduation, Post Graduation and Doctoral. It is no dream that with in a few years. In India, a number of Phds would come up in this field. Also it has a lot of specialization and super specialization studies in Ortho, Neuro etc., Like other popular science any person who aims at may achieve the goal in this field.
